FREEPORT, TX, February 19, 2009
After Hurricane Ike left its mark on the Texas Gulf Coast, the BASF Women In Business (WIB) chapter in Freeport learned the local Pregnancy Help Center was in need of baby diapers. The local non-profit had been deemed by the recovery effort to be a central distribution point of diapers for anyone in need.
BASF’s Freeport site is one of the largest production facilities for superabsorbent polymer (SAP) in the world. SAP is capable of absorbing and retaining many times its weight in water and is best known for its use in disposable baby diapers. Given this, it only seemed natural for BASF to support the effort through a holiday diaper drive at the site, according to Stephanie Bejune, an Operations Engineer and WIB Steering Team member at BASF’s Freeport site.
Beginning in December and ending last month, diaper drop-off boxes were placed around the Freeport site and employees were encouraged to donate diapers. In total, BASF employees donated 3,252 diapers to the Pregnancy Help Center.
“By encouraging our employees to purchase diapers containing SAP produced by BASF, the WIB Steering Team was able to help our community while supporting the company’s SAP operation. It's a win-win situation,” said Bejune.
BASF’s Freeport site employs 650 employees. Chemicals produced at the site are used in a wide range of product applications, including adhesives, paints and coatings, superabsorbents, nylon and plastics.
